Bored piles
Bored piles are cylindrical concrete elements, with or without reinforcement, installed using a kelly bar and auger on a drill rig. Length, diameter, material, shape and layout are all varied to suit the structural intent and the site’s ground conditions, making bored piling one of the most versatile foundation solutions for Sydney projects. On Western Sydney’s clay-over-shale ground, we take bored piers through the reactive clay and found them in the shale beneath, out of reach of seasonal movement.
Continuous flight auger (CFA) piles
CFA piles are formed by drilling a hollow-stem auger into the ground in a single pass. Once the design depth is reached, the auger is slowly withdrawn while concrete is pumped through the hollow stem to form the pile. Low-vibration and low-noise, CFA piling suits unstable ground and disturbance-sensitive sites, which makes it a frequent pick beside occupied buildings and rail corridors.
Secant pile walls
Secant piled walls are embedded retaining walls built as cantilevered or propped systems for deeper excavations. Interlocking primary and secondary piles form a continuous barrier that reduces the flow of soil and groundwater through the wall, a common choice for basements and deep shoring in built-up areas. On Sydney sites with high groundwater, a secant wall finished with a capping beam keeps the excavation dry and the neighbours’ ground where it belongs.
Cased piles
Cased piling suits weak, low-durability, sandy or riverbed soils. The pile is drilled and an 8-10mm steel casing inserted; the casing is slowly extracted as concrete is placed. This guarantees a structurally sound pile in ground that would otherwise collapse, the kind you strike on Sydney’s river flats and around Botany Bay.
Sheet piles
Sheet piling uses interlocking steel sheets driven to form a continuous wall for permanent or temporary lateral earth support, while reducing groundwater inflow. It’s a fast, reliable option for excavation support and water cut-off, particularly on temporary works where the wall comes out when the job’s done.
HOW SYDNEY GROUND CONDITIONS SHAPE PILE SELECTION
The right pile depends on what’s under your site, and Sydney’s geology changes street by street. We design for the ground first, then choose the rig.
Sandstone across eastern Sydney and the North Shore
Much of the CBD, the east and the North Shore sits on Hawkesbury Sandstone, often at shallow depth. Strong rock means shorter piles socketed into the sandstone rather than long friction piles, but sockets demand high-torque rigs and the right tooling, and rock levels can step sharply between boreholes. Our fleet handles rock sockets on constrained sites where crane access rules out larger machines.
Reactive clay over shale in Western Sydney
West and south-west of Parramatta, the Wianamatta shales weather to clays that swell and shrink with moisture. Shallow footings move with the seasons; bored piers taken through the clay and founded in shale don’t. This is our home ground. Our Penrith and Kemps Creek projects both sit on this geology, and the M12 corridor and Aerotropolis works ahead of Western Sydney will keep testing it.
Sand, alluvium and high groundwater near waterways
Sites near the Nepean, Georges and Cooks rivers and around Botany Bay sit on loose sands and alluvium, with groundwater sometimes less than two metres down. Open bores collapse in this ground, so cased piles and CFA earn their keep, and secant pile walls control groundwater on basement excavations. Dewatering near Botany Bay usually needs a licence, and disturbing soil below the water table can expose acid sulfate soils, so methods that limit drawdown protect both the program and the approvals. We delivered our Botany Rail project in these conditions.

- Soilmec SR-45: Large-capacity rotary rig for deep, large-diameter bored piles, CFA and cased piling. The workhorse for high-rise and infrastructure foundations.
- Soilmec SR-20: Compact, self-erecting rotary rig for narrow and confined sites. Piles up to ~1,200 mm diameter and 40 m deep where access is tight but depth is required.
- Bauer BG 15: Versatile mid-size rotary rig for cased and uncased bored piles and CFA. Reliable across residential and commercial foundation work.
- Bauer BG 25: High-torque rig for larger-diameter, deeper piles, with low-headroom capability suited to basement and confined-height work.
- Soiltek S60: Compact restricted-access specialist. Modular multi-section mast for bored, CFA and down-the-hole work; craneable into sites larger machines can’t enter.
- Tescar CF3: Lightweight, low-headroom rig for tight and restricted-access piling. Narrow footprint and rubber tracks for confined spaces and sensitive surfaces.
