A capping beam turns a line of separate piles into one wall. The beam runs along the trimmed pile heads and ties every pile into the same structural element. Load from props, anchors and the structure above then spreads along the whole line instead of into one unlucky pile.

Pile trimming to cut-off level
Piling crews overpour the shaft so the concrete at the top comes up sound. That surplus then comes back to design cut-off. The pile beneath it and the starter bars inside it have to survive the process. Instead of handing that off, we trim with our own excavators and breakers as part of the beam works. Nobody waits on a separate crew between the piling and the pour.
Reinforcement and cage fixing
The beam steel laps onto the starters projecting from each pile. That lap is what makes the piles and the beam work as one element. Our steelfixers then tie it in place along the beam line, working to the bar schedule from the shoring design. We check cover, lap lengths and ligature spacing before the formwork closes up. Nobody can inspect any of it after the pour.
Formwork, set-out and pour
Our in-house surveyor sets the beam line and the top-of-beam level, then rechecks both before concrete goes in. We also place through our own pumps. That counts on a boundary beam where an agitator cannot get within 20 metres of the formwork.
Beams to secant, contiguous and soldier pile walls
A secant wall offers a continuous line of concrete to cap. By contrast, a contiguous wall leaves gaps between piles for the beam to bridge. A soldier pile wall spaces its piles much further apart. The beam pulls them into one line above the infill. We build all three, though the reinforcement detailing changes with each of them.
Anchor, waler and prop interfaces
The top row of restraint usually lands on or beside the beam. Ground anchors, walers and raking props all push a concentrated reaction into it. So we size and reinforce the beam for that load, not for its own weight. Setting the ground anchor layout and the beam separately is how a job ends up redesigning both.
Pile caps and ground beams
A pile cap is a local block over a small group of piles under a column or a core. A capping beam runs continuously along a line of them. The same crews form both, and pile caps come out of detailed excavation once the bulk dig reaches base level.
Why a Piled wall needs a capping beam
A row of piles stays a row of separate elements until the beam ties them together. It spreads load along the whole line and takes the reaction from the top row of anchors, walers or props. Everything above it then gets a straight, surveyed line to set out from.
It also sets the dig program. The concrete has to reach strength before anything stresses against it. Plant working near the wall loads the beam as well.For that reason, SafeWork NSW expects a competent person to design the ground support for those loads.
Pile tolerance and beam set-out
Piles go in to a positional tolerance rather than to a millimetre. Rock steps, obstructions and boundary offsets push the odd pile off the theoretical line. A wall built hard against a neighbour has nowhere to lose that variation. The capping beam is where it gets resolved into a straight, level element the structure above can work from. Set the beam line out wrong and every basement wall, formwork run and slab edge above it inherits the error. Our surveyor works independently of the crew fixing the steel. The check never comes from the person marking their own work.
Support to neighbouring land
Where a piled wall holds up the ground next door, the beam is part of what does the holding. NSW attaches a statutory duty to that. Section 177 of the Conveyancing Act 1919 sets a duty of care over the right of support for land. Since 2000 the remedy for removing that support has run in negligence rather than nuisance. Movement along the top of a wall turns up next door as cracked render and jammed doors. The element controlling deflection at that level carries consequences well past the structural drawing.

When is the capping beam built in the program?
After the piling and the pile trimming, and before the bulk excavation gets far below the beam. The concrete has to reach the specified strength before anchors or props can stress against it. That puts the beam on the critical path between the piling and the dig.
Can you build a capping beam on a shoring design prepared by someone else?
Yes. We construct to shoring designs prepared by others as well as to our own. We can also design and build the whole retention system under one contract. That covers the piled wall, the capping beam, the anchors, the shotcrete facing and the excavation.
What do you need to price capping beam construction?
The shoring drawings and pile schedule with cut-off levels, plus the geotechnical investigation report. We also need a survey showing boundaries and neighbouring structures. Send the site layout as well, marking crane pads, sheds and truck routes near the wall. Those last two move the beam design more often than the beam length does.
