Design and Construct CFA Piling at Shell Cove

We designed and built 200 CFA piles socketed into high strength rock, plus a piled shoring wall, for Hutchinson Builders at Shell Cove. Finished within program.

Location: Shell Cove, NSW
Client: Hutchinson Builders
Contract: Design and construct
Pile type: CFA (continuous flight auger), socketed into high strength rock
Piles: 200 foundation piles
Diameters: 450 to 750 mm
Total length: 1,500 lineal m
Max depth: 8 m
Scope: Foundation piles, shoring wall piles, capping beam, shotcrete
Materials: 450 m³ of concrete, 40 t of steel
Machinery: Soilmec SR-45, Soilmec SKP80 pump, Hyundai 14t excavator
Completed: August 2026

We delivered design and construct piling at Shell Cove for Hutchinson Builders. The job covered 200 CFA foundation piles socketed into high strength rock. It also included the piles, capping beam and shotcrete for a shoring wall.

The project

Hutchinson Builders engaged us to design and build the piling at Shell Cove. The foundations needed 200 piles from 450 to 750 mm in diameter. They reach 8 m deep and add up to 1,500 lineal metres. A piled shoring wall with a capping beam and shotcrete completes the works.

Why socket foundation piles into high strength rock?

Rock is usually the strongest ground on a site. A pile drilled into it gets a firm toe and grip along the socket. It does not rely on the softer ground above.

Rock levels rarely match the drawings exactly. On a design and construct job, our engineers revise the pile. Our crew builds to it without a stop.

How the CFA rig and pump work together

We drilled each pile with the Soilmec SR-45 using our CFA piling method. The rig drills a hollow-stem auger to the founding level in one pass. We withdraw the auger slowly while the Soilmec SKP80 pumps concrete up through the stem.

The shoring wall piles, the capping beam and the shotcrete sat under the same contract.

The outcome

We finished the works on 13 August 2026, within program. That was under four weeks from our 18 July start. The job placed 450 m³ of concrete and 40 tonnes of steel. That covers the foundation piles, shoring wall piles, capping beam and shotcrete.
